We've been busy at the Center as more and more children come for
tutoring, literacy expertise and mentoring. Our deepest gratitude goes
out to members of the community, civic organizations and the Naval
Base: their support is invaluable as we work to help each child shine
and excel.

Several children from the Center took to the stage for the St. Marys
Little Theater's production of The River of Life. Executive Director,
Loretta Hutchinson, was outstanding in the role as Matilda Harris,
the first black educator in Camden County, while the children played
her students. They entranced the audience!

To the delight of all, Loretta also performed her original work, St.
Marys Song, at the recent Heart & Soul Tour: a guided tour of St. Marys for public officials, developers and dignitaries from cities throughout
Georgia.

As word of the Center's work spreads, we are blessed by offers of support
and participation.  Dr. Pat Chiarelli is tireless in her work with the
children.  Her dedication, commitment to excellence and passion
inspire us all.

A special warm hug of thanks to Mr. Roy Campbell, the author of the extraordinary book,  The Song of the Jackalope. Mr. Roy kindly provided copies of his novel and read aloud to the children - and we are so deeply touched by his talent and generosity.

Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful Girl Scouts and their leaders!
They volunteer at the Learning Center each week and organized a
wonderful Christmas party for the children with special snacks, a
play that they'd written about tolerance and kindness and presents
(bean-bags chairs for the library and coloring supplies).

We continue to receive so much support from members of the
community and extraordinary gifts come our way: equipment,
teaching supplies, encouragement and more. It has been a year of
growing, loving and learning. The children of the after-school program
make notable and demonstrated academic progress due to our focus
upon reading, social skills, problem-solving and goal-setting.

In the coming year we hope to expand our services by continuing to
increase the number of children that we can serve and creating free-of-
charge baseball clinics. (More on that exciting news in the future).

We are so deeply touched by the blessings that have come our way
through the support of the people of St. Marys. These are hard times
for so many of us but together we can create the strength of united
hearts and common purpose.  (It is true that in the darkest of moments
the light of hope shines brightest).

And so, as this year draws to a close, we give thanks - to all of you who
have followed our progress, cheered us on, given of your time and
treasures and, above all, paused to hug a child.

May this Christmas hold more love and laughter than your hearts can
hold and the New Year bring comfort, possibilities, hope, joy and peace
to you...our dear friends.

Today the following article appeared in the Tribune & Georgian

"Girl Scouts helping others

This week marks the beginning of The True Freedom Learning
Center’s “Children Helping Children” program. The afterschool
activities at the center are well-attended, and now Girl Scout
Troop 30288 will be helping out by volunteering its time to work
with the children on reading and math skills, organized play,
homework and more.
Troop leader Sandy Banks and co-leader Cindy Fitzgerald will alternate
being on hand to supervise (alongside the center’s volunteers) in a
library that is well-stocked with children’s books — many of which
came as a result of the Girl Scout’s countywide book drive.
The TFLC board’s chair, Alex Kearns, states “Our beautiful library
and computer lab were created by the generosity of this community.
The support continues to be overwhelming and I’m so impressed by
the Girl Scouts’ excitement as they plan to make a difference in other children’s lives. It really is a win-win situation: the Scouts will
experience, firsthand, the value of volunteerism while the young
children at the center will benefit from having the extra attention
and mentoring.”
The girls in the troop that will be volunteering at the Learning Center
are: Caitlin Banks, Megan Fitzgerald, Jayla Floyd, Kya Gariabaldi,
Zan Leakway, Abby Moody and Jessica Rivera."

Sometimes it's difficult to find a way to express our joy and gratitude as
our community continues to astound and bless us with generosity.

When the Center's chair went to speak with the Camden County High
School Senior Beta Club she was given a huge box of supplies for the
Center's after-school program and a monetary donation. The children
at the Center couldn't believe their eyes as we unpacked markers, pencils, paper and more. Our sincere thanks to Dr. King and the members of the
Beta Club.

Yesterday, two representatives from the Osprey Cove Women's Club,
Connie Castoc and Pat Hill, appeared at the Center with a trunk-load of supplies. Spiral notebooks, glue and glue sticks, folders, notebook paper, colored pencils, rulers, lots of pencils, index cards, Sharpie pens and highlighters, ballpoint pens, hand gel, construction paper, markers,
baby wipes, antibacterial and Lysol wipes, Kleenex, crayons, calculators, scissors, a compass, paper clips, white-out, book covers, a monetary
donation and more were brought into the Center.
What an extraordinary gift!

We also send up a prayer of thanks every day for our angel, Dr. Pat
Chiarelli, who works tirelessly with the children. Their reading skills
are improving by leaps and bounds as they eagerly work with their
beloved "Dr. Pat."

Words are such feeble things at times and we can only hope that those
who have shown such a depth of caring and generosity know that they
have brought us to tears and filled our hearts. We thank you all for the difference that you're making in the lives of so many children.

Our after-school program has taken off beyond our wildest expectations. Without even issuing an announcement about its availability, we are almost up to full capacity.

Now, from 2:30 to 5 pm, almost 20 of our community's children are cared
for by experienced volunteers as they read and do homework in our library, enjoy the many educational age-appropriate programs in our computer lab and benefit from the talents of a dedicated woman who offers her PhD-level expertise in the field of literacy.

Nearly 20 children who might otherwise be unattended after school due
to their parent's/caretaker's work hours are now learning, laughing and acquiring new skills - and all at absolutely no cost to either their parents
of the taxpayers of our community. As time goes by and our program (we hope) expands just think of how many children can be assisted by this
alone!

We cannot adequately express our gratitude to the countless people who
have donated their time, materials, books and more to this effort. And to
our volunteers - you are changing young lives for the better. We, and they, thank you.

In the past month we have been contacted by parents, teachers, churches
and organizations with questions about the Learning Center. And we have been astounded by our community's generosity. As word of what we do -
and dream of doing - for the children and families of St. Marys spreads
(again huge thanks to the Tribune & Georgian for their amazing coverage
of our Open House) we are deeply moved by both the need and the support.

Our after-school program is becoming a reality but volunteers are always  welcome.

Those of you who have visited us know of our location at the very end of
Point Peter Rd. Today someone suggested that our slogan should be
"Possibilities, Hope, Faith and Love Lives at the End of the Road."
How true in so many ways.

Our Open House was a great success! Members of St. Marys' community
toured the facilities and then enjoyed a selection of desserts and beverages.

The most common expression was one of amazement ("I had no idea that
this was all here!") that we were offering not only a beautiful children's
library, computer lab and media room but no-charge tutoring and,
hopefully in the fall, after-school programs.

Mayor Bill DeLoughy summed it up well when he stated "This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when a community works together
for the betterment of all."

Our deepest gratitude to:

Raytillia Balam who organized the wondrous "Church Ladies" who came
in on Friday night and made the Center shine.

Monique Ross for her work upstairs.

Kenya Florence Brown for helping her mom, Ellen, with the library.

Zelda for doing her decorating magic in the dining room.

Sean Myers who organized the painting and work on the outer stairs.

The members of the Board who served as docents and provided the
desserts. (Yvonne, the cakes were perfect).

The people of St. Marys and Kingsland who have donated books,
computers, equipment and more.

The Tribune & Georgian for covering this event.

The children of St. Marys: our motivation and joy.

Kevin Hutchinson, Jr. who is a daily reminder that there is no hurdle
too high, no race too long and no challenge so daunting that it cannot be overcome.

Loretta and Kevin Sr. who give so many the wings to fly.

"The spirit is the true self. The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel
are the things that endure." Marcus Tullius Cicero

Kevin Hutchinson, Jr. is a shining example of the promise and potential
of our children. Not only is he an academic star and community volunteer (tutoring and mentoring at the Center) he is an extraordinary athlete.
Kevin competed in the 2010 AAU Jr. Olympics last year (track and field) and has now qualified for the 2011 competition.

Beyond his scholastic and athletic achievements, however, those who
know Kevin know him to be blessed with humor, compassion, dedication, courage and a deeply loving heart.

As a gesture of appreciation to those who helped him to attend last year's
Jr. Olympics, Kevin, his friends and family created this video.
He is an inspiration to us all.

June 15, 2011

We want to, once again, take this opportunity to express our gratitude.
Thanks to Gaila Brandon (Riverview Hotel) we now have two lovely large
and comfy couches in our library that invite children to curl up and read.

Our free tutoring program has begun with Kevin Hutchinson, Jr. working
with  a young boy in our community each morning. Those of you who
know Kevin know him to be an extraordinary young man - a superb
scholar and athlete. But beyond the many accomplishments in his
young life, Kevin is, simply-stated, a wonderful boy. He embodies the
integrity and "willingness to serve" of his parents. Thank you, Kevin.

It is our hope that we will be ready to host an Open House next month to introduce the community to The True Freedom Learning Center and all
that it offers. We are planning no-fee after-school programs, an expansion
of our tutoring service, computer give-aways and more.

With the recent talk of severely curtailing the hours of the St. Mary's
Library, access to computers and reading material is vital to both
students and adults who may not be able to afford equipment and
internet-access fees.
Wherever we see a need for the families and children of our area we strive
to address them.
Please watch this page for details about the Open House.

At last night's City Council meeting the audience heard a story that
brought us to tears. Now we ask our community to come together and
reach out to the James family.

Born on October 9, 1996, Davondra James is the kind of child that makes
her family and community proud: a cheerleader; a conscientious student;
a loving girl with a smile that lights up a room. On July 7, 2010, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma Stage 2.

Davondra is now in a fight for her life and your help is needed. We ask
that  you donate what you can to offset the high price of transportation to Jacksonville for her treatments - and, of course, we ask for your prayers
for this lovely child and her family.

You can read Davondra's story at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/davondrajames

Councilmember and teacher, Chuck Trader, is helping to rally support
for the James family. Mr. Trader can be reached at his city

Tonight the Center's Director, Loretta, and Board Chair, Alex, attended
the monthly Camden County Board of Education meeting.

Alex delivered a presentation about the Center's work and our plans
to create a  free-of-charge after-school program for our community's
children.
(There are so few such programs available and under Georgia law a
child need only be eight years  of age to be left at home alone). We have
great hopes that the CCBOE will partner  with us in this effort in terms
of teacher-Center communication and transportation to the Center.

The Board then voted unanimously to donate all surplus computer
equipment to the Learning Center from now on. Given the number of
schools and offices in this county, we should be able to supply so many
people who need (but can't afford) a computer with equipment.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Board of Education for allowing us
the opportunity  to speak of the Center and for choosing to donate
much-needed computer equipment. It has been said that it takes a
village to raise a child...and together we are working to create a strong,
united and loving "village" for the children of St. Marys.

From St. Marys Middle School:

CRCT Tips
· Be sure students get a good night’s rest each night before testing.
· Students need to eat a good breakfast. Don’t forget that breakfast
is free to all students and is served every day at all Camden County
Schools.
· Be confident, not stressed! Students have been preparing for
these tests all year.
· Parents – testing lasts until lunchtime on some days. Try not to
schedule doctor’s appointments the mornings of testing or check
your child out during testing times. Be aware that once a child
starts testing and stops, they cannot go back to finish that
section at a later time.

Anonymous giving is, perhaps, the truest form of generosity. Yesterday
a kind "someone" left children's toys and computer games by the door of
the Learning Center. The staff and, most importantly, the children are
thrilled by this gift and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to whoever performed this lovely act of kindness.

57 percent of Georgia's 4-year-olds participated in the 2009-10
state lottery-funded Pre-K school year. Georgia's pre-kindergarten
program will now undergo a $20 million+ funding cut due to  Gov.
Nathan Deal's fiscal 2012 budget.

Deal's plan will scale the Pre-K day back from 6.5 hours to 4 hours - but
how are parents to leave their place of employment (if they have one)
to pick up their children? How are they to afford alternate daycare?

535 pre-schoolers in Camden reply upon this program. 202 of whom
are considered "at risk". Once again the most vulnerable in our society
will be punished. 202 "at-risk" children in Camden County alone, representing 38% of the children in Pre-K.

We will do all within our power to ensure that the True Freedom
Learning Center is able to offer the gift of hope to these children and their parents.

How can we ever express the depth of our gratitude to Sean and
Bill Myers? These two men purchased all of the materials and
constructed gorgeous wooden shelves that run the length of the
Center's library. They paid for everything out of their own pockets
and spent hours of their time: an extraordinary gift born of generosity
and their love for the families of this community.

Just last night, Loretta and I spoke of the 2,000 books that have been
donated and the fact that now we have such a wealth of shelving that
we may need more books to fill it all. This morning I received an email message from Suzanne Whitetree, a teacher at the Camden Middle School, saying that they have 25 boxes of books for us.
Coincidence? Perhaps - but then many of us think not...and just say a quiet "Thank you, Lord."

Jan. 22, 2011

This may not be “news” but I feel compelled to write of the small miracles
that unfold around us all each day. And they are miracles in the truest
sense, for sometimes even the most seemingly miniscule events, casual
words or a touch when it’s most needed can change lives in ways that
elude us at the time.

In the past week I have watched as young girls struggled up the stairs
of the Learning Center beneath the weight of boxes filled with the donated books that they’d collected for our Library. Their faces shone with pride
and the pleasure of “giving unto others.” That small moment could alter
the course of their lives and turn them towards the joys of public service.

I stood, hand over heart, and witnessed the loss and love on the faces
of the crowd as a flag was raised in honor of a beloved community
member. That singular shared pause in time may well change futures.

I read an email that was sent to my sister, Loretta, by a person whose life
she had touched years ago: a woman who Loretta had not heard from for
almost ten years. This young woman was struggling terribly at that time
and found shelter and solace within Loretta and Kevin’s home. Today she reached out through this website, contacted Loretta and shared her tale of success and gratitude. She wrote “The love and strength that you to
showed so many years back still lives in me and has guided my life. Has
made me who I am.” Her's is a story of trial and grief: a story that ended in personal triumph. We must only wonder how many lives this woman will touch - how many ways in which she will “pay it forward.”

I watched as a group of citizens came together for a common cause and
battled cynicism, adversity, censure and seemingly insurmountable
odds only to, finally, attain their goals for the betterment of our
community.

I listened as I sat in the sun at the St. Marys EarthKeepers Memory
Garden with an elderly woman while she shared stories of her husband
and friends of long ago. I felt the benison of her words and marveled,
anew, at the fact that we are all One, for her memories are much like
mine even though the years and circumstances between us are wide.

I read the many emails from those who sought the help of us all - from charitable agencies needing support to the Humane Society desperately seeking a washing machine – and I could only wonder at the vast web of kindness that supports our world.

Gentle words, an outstretched hand, taking the time to truly listen,
doing whatever you can to ease another’s burden…these are the small moments of grace that bless and redeem us.

And now, call that friend or family member that you’ve not spoken to
lately. Reach out to a neighbor who may be alone. Remember the
someone who altered your course. Close your eyes and feel us all as,
together, we join in this dance through space and time.

Jan. 19. 2011

Thanks to the wisdom and sharp eyes of Ellen Brown (Oceanography
Teacher at Camden County High School) we have discovered that
many of the almost-2,000 books donated to the Center's Library are
on the AR (Accelerated Reader) list. We will be creating a special section
for these books - and will work to accumulate even more. A little bit of background:

The accelerated reading (AR) program was developed at the
University of Wisconsin. It was designed to encourage young children
to read more frequently and thus to establish lifelong patterns of daily
reading. Approximately half of the school districts in the US (including
our own) now employ AR programs as part of their educational program.

Students take a preliminary 10-20 minute quiz, which tests their
reading comprehension. They are then scored in what is called a "zone
of proximal development" which determines the books that would be
best for them in terms of reading levels. (For each zone, there are
numerous book choices). The child chooses a book in his or her zone,
reads it and then takes a quiz on that book. Each book is not only rated
for zone, but also for points, which are assigned to the reader for
passing a quiz. The points are then applied to special field trips and other incentives.

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers."  ~ Charles W. Eliot

If we can, in our small way, encourage children to read, we will have
helped to set them firmly upon the path of success. Even in the darkest
hours of life, a book can keep us company, illuminate the shadows, lead
us to a better way, teach us empathy and strength and alter our course.

The shelves of the Library are soon to be installed, the books sorted and shelved and the process of liaising with our schools to create after-schools programs continued. There is such profound joy in placing books in
the hands of children and we are so grateful for the generosity of our community as so many help us with this endeavor.

Yesterday our own Loretta Hutchinson blessed the assembled crowd
at the St. Marys EarthKeepers Memory Garden with the singing of
America the Beautiful. The friends and family of O.J Lanham gathered
to dedicate a new flagpole and flag in her honor and were deeply moved
by the words of Councilman Greg Bird (who delivered the invocation)
and the healing balm of Loretta's incomparable voice.

Now that was a truly heart-lifting
sight: a group of Girl Scouts carrying
box after box of children's books up
to the library at the True Freedom Learning Center. They collected over 800 books (thus adding to the 900
that we'd gathered so far). Our dreams
of offering the children and families of the Center books, a computer lab (with 27 donated computers) and programs are coming to fruition.

"And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world." (Desiderata)

The staff, families and children of the Learning Center wish all within our community, nation and world the happiest of New Years.
As we enter 2011 we reflect upon the past - our successes, challenges, l
osses and triumphs - and look forward with eager anticipation to the year ahead. The coming months will see the completion of our library and computer lab, the creation and implementation of more programs and services and the growth of our presence within St. Marys.
With a dynamic and dedicated Board, the energy and commitment of our community and the ever-growing need for more ways in which to enrich the lives of the children and families of St. Marys, we feel that our plans and dreams are within our grasp.
To you all - we thank you for your generosity and support during 2010. Onward we go!

Dec. 22, 2010

The final days leading up to Christmas are always such busy ones as
we rush about picking up last-minute gifts, organizing our family
activities and spending precious moments with friends. In all of the hustle and bustle, please take a moment to just stop, breathe and remember...
Think of loved ones still with us - and those who have passed from our
lives. Reach out to people who are alone or in need. Perform random
acts of kindness.
This can be a time of unsurpassed joy - but also, for many, a time of
loneliness and fear. When you're standing in line at the store, look
around you, smile and tell a complete stranger that you wish him
or her a Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years. It's amazing
what the gentle balm of words can do.
To all of the families of our community and throughout the world:
may you have a blessed Christmas and may the upcoming year bring
you the riches of love, laughter and peace.

Last night we attended the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance Gala in St. Marys.
It was a wonderful night of glitz and glamour during which The Film Alliance auctioned a variety of incredible packages: trips, adventure tours and more. As the finale of the auction Loretta Hutchinson, the Center’s director, electrified the audience with a gorgeous rendition of “God Bless the Child”.
Alex Kearns, the Learning Center’s Chair, then addressed the audience:

“Our final auction item of the evening is a rather unusual one – and I thank the film board for allowing us this opportunity. There is nothing in this package that exudes glamour, pampering, Hollywood or glitz. It is called “Stars in Their Eyes” and all of you are welcome to give whatever you can.

Tonight we have felt a touch of what stardom might be like – while to so many children within our own community an evening like this is unimaginable. But look into the eyes of a child and you will see a world of potential - for no one has informed them yet that the stars are beyond their reach.

The True Freedom Learning Center, a non-profit organization at the end of Point Peter Rd., may well be one of this community’s greatest potential assets.
Here Loretta and Kevin Hutchinson and their staff work tirelessly to close
the gaps in our educational and social safety nets.

The Center itself is impressive with its well-equipped media room, chapel, kitchens, boardrooms, offices and an extensive daycare center.

People within our community are beginning to understand what the Center offers to children and families and are rallying to donate books, computers and services. We will offer a computer lab, libraries, after-school programs and more – all at no cost to our citizens.

One thing that I’ve learned during my four years in St. Marys is that the children come first. Several ladies will be circulating among the tables – and I ask you now to put “Stars in the Eyes” of so many of our community’s children and families and to give what you can to support the Learning Center.
Your generous gift will buy books, computers, musical instruments, desks, art supplies…and, above all, dreams.”

People responded by reaching into their wallets and donating hundreds of dollars. Everyone was so eager to learn more about the Center, the work that we do and our plans – and we are humbled by the generosity of our community. Our heartfelt thanks to all.

Nov. 7, 2010

Yesterday the Learning Center held our first Great Give-Away event. It was a joyous time as families came to avail themselves of the huge assortment of children’s and adult clothes and other items – all at absolutely no cost. We
feel blessed for “It is in giving that we receive” and never have we felt this more than yesterday.

Due to the techno-wizardry of the Center’s Board member Yvonne Morgan we will soon have the over 20 computers for our computer lab up and running. The lab will be available for the children and families of St. Marys for it is essential that all of our citizens be well acquainted with internet technology. We must rise up to meet the future today - and our schools are increasingly unable to provide crucial technological instruction. Our heartfelt gratitude to those who donated their gently-used computers.
We are in need of desks and chairs so, please, do think of us if you have any to spare.

Next Saturday night the glamour of Hollywood comes to St. Marys as the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance holds their inaugural gala. The fund-raising auction items are stunningly impressive! Due to the generosity of the Film Alliance Board we have been invited to auction off an item that will be called ‘Rising Stars” and all proceeds will benefit the True Freedom Learning Center.  For the price of giving what they can, the audience will receive the gift of knowing that they helped the children of our community by providing books, computer programs and so much more.

The Center’s director, Loretta Hutchinson, will be performing as the incomparable Billie Holiday, singing “God Bless the Child”. If this song, the Center’s Chair doing her utmost to speak the words to move people's hearts and Loretta’s extraordinary voice doesn’t cause generosity to pour forth, nothing will!
We would like to thank the Film Alliance’s co-founder and Vice-Chair, Barbara Ryan, for affording us this priceless opportunity to spread the word about the Learning Center and to help raise funds for our many projects.

Day by day our library and computer lab take shape while our daycare facility expands. Zelda is working her incomparable magic on another new room for the children and it is a thing of beauty. She is, on a daily basis, reminding us that a willing heart combined with extraordinary talent, vision and love can create miracles.

Meanwhile books continue to pour in from the Girl Scouts/St. Marys EarthKeepers Book Drive and we have been informed that The Coastal Academy has kindly offered to donate ten computers to add to those already given by the community.

We extend our warmest thanks to Dr. Mark Hamil and Kevin Washington of the Academy and to Board member Yvonne Morgan for not only finding computers for us but for her technological expertise. You can learn more about the Academy at http://coastalacademy.tcawiki.com/

Thanks too to Jill Helton (Publisher) and Emily Heglund (Editor) of the Tribune & Georgian for running the article about the Book Drive so often – what a gift that is.

Our Board met tonight and the thoughts and plans flew thick and fast. We are blessed by having Board that is comprised of members who bring diverse strengths and areas of knowledge to the table.  We've only just begun to build this place of learning, strength and hope for our community – but what an amazing beginning it is!

Please come to the Center on November 6 (9am – 12pm) for the Great Give-Away! Adult and children’s clothing and more are yours to take home – at absolutely no cost.

Huge thanks to Advanced Disposal! Due to their generosity the Learning Center is now "living green" - and teaching the children to be conscientious stewards of our planet. Two large outdoor recycling receptacles were delivered today and they will be filled to the brim with recyclable material each week: cardboard, glass, plastic bottles and jugs. For their pro bono services we heartily applaud Advanced.

We strive to instill respect in our children: respect for their minds, their bodies, their families, their communities and their environment. Now they can all participate and learn about the need to safeguard and respect  "Mother Earth."

Meanwhile donated books and computers continue to arrive and we re-learn, each day, the blessings of human kindness and generosity. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Sandy Banks for her efforts with the Girl Scout Book Drive and to Maryann Intravia who gave of hertime to help sort and shelve over 800 donated "gently-used" books!

What an extraordinary day we've had today!  This morning, through the amazing generosity of Dr. Stanley Prince, a child was assured of a beautiful smile - and a mother was immensely relieved. Thank you, Dr. Prince.

He and other dentists travel to Belize each year to donate their services there to Project Smile and they are selling Crest toothpaste at his office to help defray the costs of this heroic initiative. All proceeds go to Project Smile. Please stop by to thank Dr. Prince and to help support this worthy cause.

Loretta and Kevin went to Habitat of Humanity's ReStore to pick up "some donated books" that were ready for us. Imagine our tears of wonder and joy when it turned out to be, literally, hundreds of books - fiction, non-fiction, resource, fairy tales, fun, teaching, all-age books!

Soon we will see our hopes become a reality and we will be able to offer our children and families libraries and computer labs. We are in awe of the giving hearts of St. Marys and Camden County.

When you feel alone; when you despair of finding kindness in this sometimes cold world...just reach out your hand and someone will be there.

The Girl Scouts of Camden County Book Drive for the True Freedom Learning Center has begun - and what a beginning it is!

Habitat for Humanity's ReStore contacted us today and suggested that we bring "a truck" to pick up the donated books.

We hope to create two Reading Rooms at the Center - one for our wee ones and one for the older children. With the financial constraints of our local library causing decreased hours and the time/dollar-crunch that working parents must deal with, it is becoming more and more difficult for children to access books:  books that will enrich their lives, open their minds, hone their skills and allow them the quiet delights of discovery.

At the Learning Center we hope to build a place where all of our children can easily find books and revel in reading.
Meanwhile the Girl Scouts are learning that books are precious gifts and that they can change a child's life with their generosity.

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." — Frederick Douglass

Please bring your gently-used "young people's books" to the locations listed below.  Books and used computers...windows to the world and hope for our children and our families.

The St. Marys EarthKeepers (http://www.stmarysearthkeepers.com/) are partnering with the Girl Scouts of Camden County in a book-drive for The True Freedom Learning Center's Children's Library. The Scouts will be collecting new and gently-used children's books (suitable for toddlers through to middle-school ages) for donation to the Center.

This is such an exciting and worthwhile project for the Girl Scouts and a perfect partnership between organizations: recycling while giving the priceless gift of books.

The public is invited to drop off used children's books in the boxes for that purpose at Once Upon a Bookseller (207 Osborne St, downtown St. Marys) and Habitat for Humanity's ReStore (302 S Lee St., Kingsland) or to contact a Girl Scout leader to arrange pick-up.

According to Scout Leader, Sandra Banks, "The Girl Scouts are so enthusiastic about this project and we hope that everyone pitches in to make this a resounding success!"

To contact us regarding the book drive, please call Alex Kearns at (912) 673-6120.

What a wonderful Board meeting we had last night! We are blessed by the diverse talents, expertise, ideas, backgrounds and approaches of our Board and exhilarated by the challenges and work ahead of us. It is thrilling to begin a venture of this nature - a venture whose time has surely come - for we have no boundaries beyond our own energy and ingenuity.

In our community, state and nation we have reached a point of unprecedented divisiveness and hardship (how often those go hand in hand) and already the Center is beginning to bring people together for the common causes of family unity, individual empowerment, children's welfare...and the sheer joy of doing the right thing.

Although we have been in operation for over 18 months, we recently decided to truly let others know that we’re here and working for the community. After a few short weeks of spreading the word we are becoming well known and generating "buzz."

City Council and local/state politicians are well aware of us now, merchants such as Once Upon a Bookseller are offering help, fellow organizations are responding to the call for support and involvement (Habitat for Humanity, Camden Children's Alliance & Resources, the St. Marys EarthKeepers, the Tribune & Georgian, the Girl Scouts and others). Through the website we are not only helping those in our own community but attracting the attention of people throughout Georgia and beyond. Who knows? Perhaps we will begin a small movement towards healing and unity when people begin to see the rewardsof working together to create abrighter tomorrow for us all.

In November there is to be a huge Coastal Georgia Film Alliance gala in St. Marys. During this event there will be high-ticket items auctioned and the organizers have agreed to allow us to auction an item that will be called "Rising Stars." Everyone will be invited to bid and buy this item - the gift of hope for our children and families - and all proceeds will go to the Learning Center. (By the way, our Loretta will be singing at the gala as the incomparable Miss Billy Holiday performing "God Bless the Child").

These are exciting times of immense possibility and we thank you all for your interest and support.

It is with heavy hearts that we must say "goodbye" to our beloved Cookie Johnson. Cookie has passed away and her absence will leave a vast space to fill in our community.
She was "Mama Cookie" to so many of us, a staunch supporter of programs for our children and elderly citizens, a fixture at City Council meetings as she fought to have the voice of the people heard, a one-woman welcome committee for new arrivals to our town, a source of humor and delight and an endless harbor of love for all.
Cookie had been so excited by the work that we are doing and planning at the Learning Center. Now we will go on with our angel on our shoulders - guiding our efforts with a smile and words of encouragement. As our Cookie would say, "Amen to that!"

Meanwhile our plans to build a computer/media center are coming to fruition as members of the community rally to donate gently-used computer equipment. Our latest benefactors are Mr Ken Worthing and Mr and Mrs Roger and Rosemary Rillo. Our sincere thanks, too, to Connie Castoc for the donated children's books - you have made so many children smile.

Many families in Camden County do not have home computer access - and the schools are cutting back on computer programs. In this day and age it is imperative that our citizens of all ages be conversant with technology for it is a vital component of almost any job. Please do keep us in mind before you dispense with your computers!

The St. Marys DDA's  Scarecrow Stroll on Tuesday, October 12th, 5-7pm is such a delight for children. Scarecrows line the streets of our community and we're often amazed by the creativity.  Build A Scarecrow Day is Saturday, October 9th, 10 am-12pm at Orange Hall and we'll be there creating a scarecrow for the Learning Center - so please join us!  It's free, it's fun and it offers another opportunity for family time.

The "Parents-Inspiring-Parents" support group meets on the third Monday of each month: 6-7:30pm at 860-A King's Bay Rd., St. Marys (in the same plaza as Aunt B's).
There is no cost involved and all parents, guardians and foster parents are welcome to come and enjoy an environment of mutual support.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, the St. Marys Kiwanis Club will be hosting the 38th annual Rock Shrimp Festival. With its parade, wide array of delicious and affordable food, vendor's booths, music and entertainment, the Festival offers a great day for the residents of Camden County and beyond. Family-friendly events such as this offer us all a time to just relax, spend time with the children and celebrate our community. If you'd like to march in the parade with the St. Marys EarthKeepers just let us know. Come and join in the fun!

Within hours of our Public Service Announcement appearing in the Tribune & Georgian we have received calls by someone who has a computer (with monitor, keyboard etc.) to donate and another who will contribute children's books. We expect that many more will contact us in the days to come, thus providing computers and books for the children, adults and teens - while lessening the burden on our landfill.

Last night we attended a gathering for Congressman Jack Kingston and were so gratified to discover that word of the Learning Center is spreading at an astounding rate! As community awareness and support grows so, too, will our ability to create programs that can address the needs of St. Marys families.

Our Board is in place and consists of a diverse range of caring and talented people: teachers, administrators, pastors, a marketing and communications director and others. Our sincerest thanks to those who are helping to make our vision a reality

Yesterday we toured the Sanford-Brown Institute in Jacksonville, FL. The Director of Admissions, Fred Webster, and the Admissions Representative, Katherine Cassista, showed us the many facets of that amazing facility as we spoke of the need to ease the burden of bureaucratic paperwork that daunts those who have young children: the many mothers and fathers who wish to reach for new heights while knowing that their children are receiving superb care.

By building a strong relationship with facilities such as Sanford-Brown, the Learning Center hopes to ease the way for those within our community who wish to pursue further education and career choices.

Sept. 1, 2010

Thanks to the generosity of Advanced Disposal, the Learning Center will now have its own commercial-size recycling bin. This will prove invaluable as we strive to teach our children the importance of environmental stewardship and to lessen our own "carbon footprint."

- Habitat for Humanity and ReStore are partnering with the Learning Center in order to both find needed equipment and to spread the word about the many services that we offer.

- Loretta has been asked to perform at Coastal Georgia Film Alliance gala in Nov. and that will allow us another opportunity to speak of the Center  (while sharing the beauty of her voice).

- We have been asked, by the Executive Director, to tour Sanford-Brown University in Jacksonville to see what can be done to align the two resources.

- We now have a group page on Facebook so join us as a "friend"!
